  • Most common form
  • Staph
  • in the hospitalized and debilitated
  • Begins centrally in and around lobular bronchi, extends peripherally along bronchus
  • Multifocal consolidation = patchwork quilt; eventually coalesce.
  • Exudates fill airways = no air bronchograms
  • 25-75% form abscess
  • Empyema and parapneumonic effusion common
